Emerging Markets: Is The Growth Story Over?
Over the past several years the validity and sustainability of emerging market's growth story has come into question. Since its peak in late 2007, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index has fallen some 35% while the S&P has risen roughly 30%. Meanwhile, with China slowing and commodities prices falling, the EM growth promise looks decidedly suspect. A key question is: has selectivity among emerging markets become even more important? For example, over the past several years there has been large divergence within EM with countries such as Mexico and India showing economic durability, while Brazil and Russia are in recession with significant political risks looming. And what are we to make of China? Lastly, many experts have recently raised concerns over emerging market debt and the risks it poses for growth and stability in an environment where the US Federal Reserve is ending its practice of extraordinary monetary easing and may raise interest rates.
