Indian ambassador touts infrastructure opportunity
India’s ambassador to the United States said Wednesday that her country’s growing economy and infrastructure needs are creating big business opportunities for Minnesota companies and scores of other U.S. firms.
“We are looking to improve our infrastructure [and] to improve agricultural production,†said Meera Shankar, who spoke to the Economic Club of Minnesota at the Minneapolis Club. She noted that India’s infrastructure needs could top $1 trillion over the next decade.
“We would hope the U.S. and companies in Minnesota would be active in this sector,†Shankar said.
India’s infrastructure needs include airports, roads and energy generation, including wind turbines and other green technology, Shankar said.
In an interview after her speech, Shankar said India hopes to expand its solar energy capacity to 20,000 megawatts by the next decade.
