India-led UNSC adopts first-ever presidential statement on maritime security

- The UN Security Council adopted the first-ever presidential statement on maritime security. This came after PM Modi chaired a debate focused on global cooperation for maritime security. As the UNSC president this month, India noted the threats to maritime safety & security. India asked to consider implementing the 2000 UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. AEM Jaishankar thanked members for 'supporting the first signature event of Indian Presidency’. Monday’s debate was a signature event of India’s presidency of the 15-nation UN body. Modi is the first Indian PM to preside over a UNSC debate focussed on maritime security.
- The meeting was attended by several heads of state & the government of member states of the UNSC. UNSC for the first time discussed maritime security in such a high-level open debate.
